“What do you think?” Katherine asked as she pulled out yet another dress from her closet, holding it up for her friend’s inspection.

“Fine, if you’re going to a funeral,” Cindy told her frankly.

“What’s wrong with it?”

“Where should I begin?” Cindy retorted.

“That bad?”

“Absolutely. I know you own pretty clothes. Is there some hidden motive for dressing ugly tonight?”

Katherine held the dress up to her chest and peered into the mirror. “I want to make the right kind of impression.”

“That you’re matronly and dull?”

Letting the dress slide down, Katherine turned to her friend. “Actually, I want to look like the kind of person who could have a husband and children.”

Cindy grabbed her hands. “Oh, Katiecakes! You are the kind of person who can have the perfect family. But don’t you see…you can’t pretend to be someone you’re not.” For a moment the pain of Cindy’s own past surfaced in her eyes. “Trust me. That doesn’t work. You’re not a reserved, stuffed potato. You’re you. And that’s great. You have style, color, warmth, panache!”

“Panache?” Katherine repeated skeptically.

“You betcha. Don’t you see how special you are? I know men might be a little intimidated by the minister thing, but Michael’s past that. He’s seen how wonderful you are. His late wife may have been the traditional type.” Cindy’s voice softened; she was awash in her own memories. “That doesn’t mean you should try to change who you are.”

Katherine looked down at the decidedly drab dress. “I suppose you’re right. If I remember correctly, I bought this for a job interview when I was in college.” Her voice grew small. “Somehow I thought it might be more suitable for tonight.”

Cindy’s voice gentled even more, her words guided by the heartbreak of her own experience. “If Michael doesn’t like you for who you are, he’s not the one for you.”

Katherine lifted her eyes. “But I sure hope he is.”

“The one?” Cindy asked softly.

“And only.” Even as she voiced the words, Katherine felt her heart clutch, remembering her past…and her legacy.

Cindy tried to lighten her mood. “Don’t look so worried. Love’s supposed to be about happiness, remember?”

If only that were so, Katherine thought in despair. If only.
