âWhat do you think?â Katherine asked as she pulled out yet another dress from her closet, holding it up for her friendâs inspection.
âFine, if youâre going to a funeral,â Cindy told her frankly.
âWhatâs wrong with it?â
âWhere should I begin?â Cindy retorted.
âThat bad?â
âAbsolutely. I know you own pretty clothes. Is there some hidden motive for dressing ugly tonight?â
Katherine held the dress up to her chest and peered into the mirror. âI want to make the right kind of impression.â
âThat youâre matronly and dull?â
Letting the dress slide down, Katherine turned to her friend. âActually, I want to look like the kind of person who could have a husband and children.â
Cindy grabbed her hands. âOh, Katiecakes! You are the kind of person who can have the perfect family. But donât you seeâ¦you canât pretend to be someone youâre not.â For a moment the pain of Cindyâs own past surfaced in her eyes. âTrust me. That doesnât work. Youâre not a reserved, stuffed potato. Youâre you. And thatâs great. You have style, color, warmth, panache!â
âPanache?â Katherine repeated skeptically.
âYou betcha. Donât you see how special you are? I know men might be a little intimidated by the minister thing, but Michaelâs past that. Heâs seen how wonderful you are. His late wife may have been the traditional type.â Cindyâs voice softened; she was awash in her own memories. âThat doesnât mean you should try to change who you are.â
Katherine looked down at the decidedly drab dress. âI suppose youâre right. If I remember correctly, I bought this for a job interview when I was in college.â Her voice grew small. âSomehow I thought it might be more suitable for tonight.â
Cindyâs voice gentled even more, her words guided by the heartbreak of her own experience. âIf Michael doesnât like you for who you are, heâs not the one for you.â
Katherine lifted her eyes. âBut I sure hope he is.â
âThe one?â Cindy asked softly.
âAnd only.â Even as she voiced the words, Katherine felt her heart clutch, remembering her pastâ¦and her legacy.
Cindy tried to lighten her mood. âDonât look so worried. Loveâs supposed to be about happiness, remember?â
If only that were so, Katherine thought in despair. If only.
