Chapter 14

Callie

“Jake, what are you doing here?” I pulled my hand back from Gabe’s.

“You disappeared on me. What did you expect me to do?” he said, crossing his arms. He shot Gabe a deadly look.

Gabe glared back at him, but stood up. “Maybe I should go so you two can have a moment alone.”

“Good idea,” Jake said, sneering.

“Gabe, just wait a minute. You don’t have to go.” I turned and looked at Jake, fuming.

“I’ll wait over here. This sounds like it’s none of my business,” he said as he left and started walking towards the parking lot.

I spun around towards Jake. “You have no right to hunt me down. If I wanted to talk to you, you would have heard from me. You need to leave.”

“Callie, you can’t just cut me off like this,” Jake said, changing his tone and pleading. “We have to talk.”

“I can’t get into this now.”

“Then meet me tomorrow afternoon. I can come to you.”

I looked uneasily in Gabe’s direction; he was almost to his car. I didn’t want him to leave without getting a chance to explain.

“Fine. Come during lunch,” I said, defeated.

“Great. I’ll see you then.” Jake backed away reluctantly, watching me head off in Gabe’s direction.

I ran and caught up to Gabe. “I’m so sorry about that.”

He shifted uncomfortably. “What is there to be sorry about? I didn’t realize you were involved.”

“I’m not… well, not really. It’s a long story. He shouldn’t have come here.”

“It’s ok, you don’t owe me an explanation.”

Irritated, I stepped back. “I know that. I just didn’t want you to get the wrong idea about things.”

“What idea should I have?”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

Gabe’s lips curved into a smile. “Oh. Well, I’m glad to hear it.”

I backtracked. “Not that you care or anything, since we’re just friends and all. I just didn’t want you to think I was keeping things from you.”

“Noted.” He stepped in a little closer. “Well, this was certainly an eventful day.”

“How’s your face feeling? You ok?”

“Well, my ego is pretty bruised from being accosted by a giant Christmas penguin, but physically I’m fine.”

I laughed. “It brings new meaning to ‘Deck the Halls’, am I right?”

Gabe’s eyes grew wide with amusement. “Callie, was that a joke? I think that’s the first joke I’ve heard you tell.”

I felt myself growing red. “Stop it. I’m just messing around.”

“That was possibly the worst joke I’ve ever heard.”

I punched him in the arm playfully. “Careful, bub. You’ve already been beaten up by a penguin today. Don’t make me be the next in line.”

He laughed and threw up his hands protectively. “I admit defeat! Don’t hurt me!”

I pulled my coat tighter and shivered. “I really appreciate you coming here today and seeing what we have going on.”

“It’s all great. You’ve cinched some great events around town. This truck is brilliant and a smart expansion of your business. I can’t believe the line that has formed since we’ve been sitting here. Everyone loves it.”

“Thanks, Gabe.” I paused, searching for the right words. “I
