CHAPTER 9
The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression,
but he will by no means clear the guilty,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children,
to the third and the fourth generation
Numbers 14:18

As the Shantz family walked toward the Millersâ haus for the Sunday gathering, Stephen Williams called Hazel aside.
âWhat is it, Stephen?â she snapped.
âI thought youâd like to know Iâve been to Colinâs house. Iâve helped him and his wife with some house repairs and I took them a considerable amount of food.â
Hazel felt bad for snapping at him. âStephen, thatâs wunderbaar.â She remembered how awful heâd been to Colin when heâd come into the store the other day. Now, heâd made up for his rudeness.
âI thought that would make you happy. I realized that Iâve been a mean and selfish person; you helped me to see that.â
âHow are they? Colin and his wife?â
âTheyâre well. Nancy, Colinâs wife, is getting better.â
âCome along, Hazel.â
Hazel turned to see Miriam and Adam right by her. âHello, Miriam, Iâll be right there.â
Stephen smiled at her again when Hazel turned back around to look at him. âYou go on ahead, Iâll tend to my horse and Iâll be in soon.â
Miriam had waited for her, and Adam had gone ahead into the house.
Miriam grabbed Hazelâs arm. âWords are easy, and he might have been nice to that elderly couple just so he could impress you. All Iâm saying to you is to be careful.â
âI donât like him though, Miriam. Not like that.â Hazel didnât mean to lie; her lie slipped out of her mouth before she could think of what to say.
âYouâve got your eyes on someone else?â Miriam asked.
Hazel nodded. âI donât want to say who in case he doesnât feel the same about me.â
âIâve got an idea who it is,â Miriam said.
Hazel frowned at her sister. âDo you?â
Miriam nodded. âJah, I think that I do.â
Hazel whispered, âCan you keep quiet about it, then? I wouldnât want anyone to know.â
âJah, I wonât say a thing, but I could do something to help you.â
âLike what?â Hazel giggled.
âAsk you both to dinner.â
They stopped talking when they reached the front door of the house. Their small Amish community had built up to a point where they were now able to hold their gatherings every second Sunday rather than every fourth Sunday. Also, they now had grown enough to have two ministers and a deacon in their district. Bishop John Fair visited once a month, and this Sunday, the Bishop was in attendance.
All the furniture had been moved out of the Miller house to fit in all the long benches for people to sit on. There were close on eighty folk in attendance, and the Millersâ house was small, so everyone was close together.
Hazel noticed that Stephenâs mother was glaring at her from one of the rows in the middle. She nodded at Mrs. Williams and smiled, but Mrs. Williamsâ expression did not change. Mrs. Williams curled her upper lip into a snarl, and she turned around.
