CHAPTER SIXTEEN

TWO DAYS LATER, Grant felt like he was still riding Maggie’s winning high from the bowling league on Thursday night. He’d ended the work week yesterday with one of the most enjoyable moments he could recall having at work in a long while. His patient visits had been interesting. Two of which were injuries that were far from basic and challenged Grant’s skills and training. He would definitely be following up with Dr. Toro about those patients, if not several others too, after he left.

But it wasn’t business on Grant’s mind now. It was his cowgirl.

Maggie was on King with nine-year-old Riley Bishop seated in the saddle in front of her. Riley’s pink boots complemented Maggie’s bedazzled pink tank top. Both wore matching wide smiles and had their hair braided in the same intricate style. They’d been guiding the gelding around cones set up the length of the arena for almost an hour. After several passes, Maggie had Grant rearrange the cones into a new pattern.

The pair had been inseparable since young Riley’s arrival that morning. From cleaning out stalls to feeding the horses to braiding each mane in the stable barn, Riley absorbed Maggie’s every word. Followed her every instruction. Grant hadn’t been much better. He’d checked on them, helped when he could, and basically lingered nearby. Easier to hear their laughter and lend a hand if needed.

Maggie stopped King in the center of the arena and whispered something to Riley. The pair’s focus was centered on something behind Grant.

Before he could turn around, a rope looped over Grant and tightened around his torso.

“That’s how it’s done, people,” Caleb shouted, and his burst of laugher ricocheted around the arena.

Grant tipped his head at Maggie and Riley. “You two could’ve given me a warning,” he said.

Riley’s eyes lit up and she caught her giggle in her hands. Maggie simply threw her head back and spoke through her laughter. “Sorry. There wasn’t really time.” Then she smiled at his brother. “Caleb, that was pretty impressive.”

“Thanks.” Caleb came into Grant’s view, seated atop a stunning palomino quarter horse named Whiskey Moon.

“That was luck.” Grant shimmied out of the rope, then eyed Caleb. “You’ll need more than luck this afternoon, little brother.”

Caleb leaned forward in his saddle. “Grant, you should be disqualified for sneaking in extra practice with Maggie and Riley.”

“Even with private lessons, Grant is not going to win.” Ryan strolled inside the arena, leading Mischief, his grullo mustang. “You shouldn’t waste your worry on him.”

“Seriously, it’s me you all should be concerned about beating.” Josh followed, trotting into the arena on Cyrus his Morgan horse, and tipped his hat in greeting to Maggie and Riley.

That launched the brothers into a good-natured debate about their skills right there in the center of the arena.

Roy and Sam strolled in next. Their boots kicking up dust, their cowboy hats pulled low. Their own laughter booming. Grandpa Sam rested his arms on the metal railing, propped his boot on the lower rung, and let out a shrill whistle.
