* * *

What was she doing? How had this happened? Why was she letting it...?

And that was where her thoughts stopped, right there. As his mouth descended on hers she felt panic like a lightning strike—and then they were kissing and the panic simply evaporated. Gone. Forgotten.

There was only Angus.

If she still had her faculties, she’d remember that she’d made a vow never to let anyone close. Never to let anyone pierce the shell of self-protection she’d so carefully built around herself. She’d had no intention of kissing anyone.

She’d certainly had no intention of kissing Angus. He was her colleague. He was her tenant. Kissing such a man would only lead to complication upon complication upon complication.

But this kiss had no intention behind it, nor did it have regard to consequences. It was an instinctive, almost primeval response to a longing she hadn’t known until this moment that she was capable of. She’d agreed to be kissed before her defences caught up with desire.

Desire was demanding she be kissed, and it was demanding that she kiss him right back.

Even then, surely the kiss should have been tentative, the first gentle exploration of something that seemed to be growing between them. But there was nothing tentative about this kiss. Or about the way she was feeling. Yes, there should have been, but should didn’t seem to be happening. Would had taken over. She would kiss him, sensible or not.

Forces bigger than both of them were in play here.

His hands had caught her face. His lovely, long fingers were cradling her cheeks as he kissed her, and the feel of him... The taste, the smell, the strength... The need...

It felt like...a kiss to change her world?

That was a stupid thing to think, but then there was no room for thought.

There was only this man.

And as his hands held her close, as tenderness and care and mutual longing engulfed her, things changed.

She was a woman who’d spent years building a shell of self-protection. She’d learned what happened if she let down her defences, and she carried her grief for her baby like a shield.

And Angus—who was he? He was a man who seemed to have been in a loveless marriage. He’d walked away to protect his child, but who knew anything about him apart from that?

Did he want another family?

Family... Angus’s mention of the word should have warnings flashing like neon lights right now, but there was no space for thoughts inside her head, not in this cocoon of firelight, of warmth, of want, of need.

Not in the touch of her mouth meeting his. Not in the way his hands held her face, drew her into him, deepening the kiss.

Not in the way her body responded.

Oh, she needed this. It was a need that was beyond reason, and if he’d drawn back now she would have fought him every inch of the way.

His kiss was deepening still further. His hold was stronger, surer, and her hands went around his body and held him in their turn.
