Yara’s knees didn’t quite hold all of her weight when she got out of the car and followed Salvador to the front door. They’d spoken so casually about their lives during the car ride, with her sharing things she didn’t think she would—until those words had slipped right out of her mouth and into the open. The odd thing was that she felt relief to finally have admitted to an aspect of her marriage that had gone awry. That travelling the world had never meant to be such a big part of her career, but each time she had returned home she felt trapped in this farce of a marriage her parents had convinced her was what marriages were supposed to be like.

She’d come close to telling Bianca how she felt, believing her sister would understand, but her courage had thus far failed her. Even if her sister understood her, what if word got back to her mother that she’d not made the marriage she had been so keen on work? Though she knew Bianca would never betray her trust, the news might slip out.

So many years later, she still felt the pressure of carrying her parents’ ideal family picture on her shoulders, weighing her down. Until Salvador had come back into her life, and all she could feel now was this burning sensation of intense longing that could only be quenched by being with him. He had not judged her for her words, simply taking them at face value and believing her.

Her heart squeezed tight when she thought about his situation and how much judgement he himself had experienced throughout his entire life. Despite his family’s perilous path, he’d given up his home to take care of his nephew while his brother served his sentence. A beautiful home, Yara noted as she stepped through the door, yet something crucial seemed absent.

The entrance of the house gave way to an open-plan living room, where a large, dark blue corner couch dominated the space. An empty vase stood on the glass coffee table and that along with the empty fruit bowl standing on the granite countertop of the kitchen island gave her an understanding of what was missing—a family to make everything come alive.

As it currently was it didn’t lack any beauty, but it didn’t feel alive.

‘Did you live here with your ex?’ she asked, looking for the traces of the man Salvador had been attached to in the past.

Salvador put his backpack on the floor as he locked the door behind him, looking around the place as if he hadn’t seen it in a while. ‘Ah, no. We lived in the city. I didn’t know if Felipe would have to serve more time, but I knew my nephew would have to stay with me for some weeks until his father’s sentencing. Edinho wasn’t thrilled about that temporary arrangement, so when I got permanent custody of Felix we had to call things off between us.’

‘He didn’t want to accept Felix in your lives?’ she asked, unable to comprehend this stance.
