Sigrith has not spoken a word to me.

And she has barely spoken two words to our mother.

I have no idea how she is going to react when she sees Emeline. I suspect not well.

Mother is trying with her, but Sigrith has no interest in making small talk. The only thing she seems to take interest in is reminding me of all the wrongs done to her. Not by words, however, because her silence speaks volumes.

The closer we get to King Egbert’s estate, the more nervous my mother becomes.

She told me she escaped from here, but Emeline was being held prisoner. She tried her hardest to help free her, but Emeline told her to find me. That sounds like my brave hugrekki. Always putting others before herself.

“What is the plan?” Mother asks for the tenth time.

I’ve not answered her as I am still unsure.

Killing King Egbert is obviously the most preferable plan, but until I know what he wants, I will have to try to control myself.

There is one thing I still cannot rid from my mind and that is the violence my mother showed toward Queen Redburh. It felt personal. Something doesn’t feel right. I cannot place what it is, but something feels…wrong.

“The plan is to protect his precious little princess,” Sigrith says, not hiding her disgust. “As long as she is safe, then who cares about anyone else. Isn’t that right, brother?”

“Sigrith, I have said I am sorry and I know that will never make amends for what I did.”

“No, Skarth, it will not. Ever,” she replies, biting into an apple. “Do you have any idea what was done to me because you chose her over me?”

I lower my eyes as I can only imagine the punishment she received.

“Mother, what are your thoughts on the matter? What do you think about your son leaving me behind because he chose a fucking Saxon instead of his own flesh and blood?”

We ride in silence as Mother doesn’t want to get involved in our squabble. But I know she agrees with her.

“Well, I think it is unforgivable and if he really meant his apology, we would be riding away from danger, not toward it. But the fact that he is once again saving her is proof that his apology is just words. You, dear brother, are nothing but a smitten weakling.”

I grit my teeth, not biting back because I know she is angry.

“So the plan is…we don’t have a plan. We will risk our lives to ensure the life of one is safe and sound.”

Neither me nor my mother speak because there is no reasoning with Sigrith when she gets this way.

We ride the rest of the way in silence.

King Egbert will have everyone I love in one place, which means I am at his mercy until he reveals what it is he wants with me. I could always suggest Sigrith and my mother stay elsewhere, but the truth is, I don’t want to let them out of my sight.
