Chapter 15
Christopher
Harper throws a critical eye at my meal. âI cannot believe you ordered the famous Second Chance burger without the bun or the fries. I think that is an actual legal offense in Hunterâs Creek. Youâd better hope I donât turn you in.â Sheâs got this super cute cheeky smile on her face as she picks a French fry from her plate and puts it in her mouth.
Weâre sitting in the Second Chance Café having dinner. Weâve spent a lot of time together in the last week, and itâs not necessarily been in front of other people, either. I know itâs because we enjoy one anotherâs company, and for me, being with her brings so much light and warmth into my day.
Sure, some of the time weâre together is spent working on the festival performance, but weâve met for meals and coffee and long walks through the parklands and forest that border the town, too.
Harper looks breathtakingly beautiful again tonight, as she does every time I see her. This time, sheâs wearing a pair of faded jeans that hug her body in the best possible way, and one of her floral tops thatâs loose fitting but sexy at the same time. No daisies this time.
Yes, Iâm still keeping score.
I shake my head as she crams more fries into her mouth. âWell, I canât believe you ordered the same burger with extra fries.â
âItâs because theyâre so good. Here, you have to try one.â She takes a fry and holds it up, close to my lips, as though sheâs going to feed it to me. Itâs an intimate thing to do, and shows me how close weâve becomeâand not for show.
I open my mouth to protest and she pushes the fry inside. âHey!â I exclaim before I chew on the fry.
âSee? Good, right?â
âI cannot believe you just did that to me,â I reply with a laugh.
Sheâs right. Itâs a very good French fry. But itâs still a French fry, and ordinarily, I donât touch them. âYou do know that is the first time Iâve had deep fried food in years?â
âWell, itâs high time you had some more, then, isnât it?â she replies with her grin in place. âAunt Sheila?â she calls out.
The fact that the owner of the coffeehouse is Harperâs aunt, is further proof of my hypothesis that everyone in Hunterâs Creek is related.
âWhat is it, honey?â Sheila asks.
âTopher tells me he hasnât had French fries in years.â
âHe what?â Sheila calls back, and every head in the place turns to look at me.
Terrific.
âGet that man a plate of French fries, stat!â a voice calls out from another table, and I look to see itâs Suzanne, my colleague from the mill, grinning back at me.
âGood call,â Harper says to her. âOne plate of French fries, thanks, Aunt Sheila.â
âComing right up, honey,â she replies, throwing us a wink and a grin as wide as Mount Rainier. See? Iâve got the local lingo down pat.
Things have come a long way since I first
