KHLOE

The pilot announced we would be landing soon. I quickly shut down the laptop and focused my gaze out the window. I didn’t want to miss any of this.

“Can I come back now?” Ben asked from his seat across the aisle.

“Yes, you can,” I said, grinning. “Thank you for giving me the time to work on my paper.”

“Did you get it done?”

“I did,” I said with eyes taking in the lights coming into view.

“You’re staring pretty hard at those lights,” he said.

“I’ve never seen them before,” I replied.

“What?”

I turned to look at him. “I’ve never been to Las Vegas.”

“No way!” He looked genuinely surprised. “I didn’t realize this was your first trip.”

“My father was always very strict,” I explained. “When I told him I wanted to go for my twenty-first birthday, he put his foot down. Granted I was seventeen at the time, but he always complained about the debauchery that happened in Sin City. Then when I did turn twenty-one, I couldn’t quite afford the trip. I was thinking about doing it after graduation, but then you happened and here we are.”

“I’m thrilled I get to see this with you on your first time,” he said. “We should stay for a couple extra days. I want you to get the best experience possible.”

“I don’t gamble,” I reminded him. “I don’t think I need more than a day or two to see the place.”

“We’ll have to come back again,” he said. “You’ll love some of the shows.”

“I would like that,” I said.

The plane touched down and I wasn’t really all that surprised to see there was a waiting limo. The driver put our bags in the car while we climbed in. We were whisked away minutes later.

“Wow! That is incredible!”

I had seen the lights on TV plenty of times, but to see it in person was so much better. People crowded the sidewalks. I saw plenty of the usual touristy types along with cops walking through the crowds to keep the peace. Lights danced and illuminated the area. I noticed people congregating in front of a pond. Then I realized what it was. The limo pulled to a stop under the lights of the massive hotel just as the fountain came to life.

I practically jumped out of the limo to see the fountain’s show. Ben came to stand beside me. “We’ll have plenty of time to see these,” he said. “Let’s get checked in.”

I followed him inside and hung back to check out the beautiful lobby. With the key in hand, we stepped off the elevator. Once again, I was surprised, even though I probably shouldn’t have been, by the luxuriousness of the room. We stepped inside and I had to take a minute to drink it all in.

“This is impressive,” I said.

“Would you like a drink?” he asked.

“Please,” I said, smiling.

“I’ll open the champagne. Why don’t you open the blinds and check out the view? They’re automatic.”

I found the control and opened the blinds in the living room. I started laughing.
