JOURNEY

“Journey?”

My head shot up straight and pulled my neck muscles. “Ow.” I rubbed the kink in my neck. I was a little disorientated.

“Journey, what are you doing here?”

I jumped out of the most uncomfortable chair on the planet. “You’re awake!”

I rushed to Dottie’s bedside. She looked awful. When I had first walked in to see her, my heart had dropped. The nurses told me she was okay, but she didn’t look okay. She was bruised from head to toe—literally her toes were bruised. Her pinky toe was broken. Apparently, that was another part of her luck. They were surprised her whole foot hadn’t been broken or worse.

“Are you really here?” she whispered. She reached up and touched her head. “I’m still in the hospital, right?”

“Yes, you are,” I said faintly. “It’s a stupid question, but how are you? Do you want me to call a nurse? Do you need more pain meds?”

“I don’t know how I am,” she said. “You tell me. Everything hurts.”

I gently touched her good hand. “I’m so sorry.”

She turned to look at her arm that was bandaged from her fingers all the way past her elbow. Screws were sticking out from the bandages. “Oh wow,” she said. “That explains why my arm hurts.”

“It’s broken in a couple places. I don’t know the details, but they put it back together with some screws and rods.”

“My stomach hurts,” she said.

“Because they cut you open and fixed you up on the inside. Plus, you broke a couple ribs.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “But that’s it? I’m going to recover, right?”

“Yes.” I leaned down to give her a gentle hug. “You’re going to be fine.”

I grabbed a tissue and dabbed at the tears. Her face was purple and mottled. I didn’t know where to touch without causing her more pain.

“But you’re here,” she said. “How long have I been out?”

“I’m not sure,” I answered. “I got here a couple hours ago, and you were out.”

“Why are you here?” she asked. “Are you not telling me something? Is it bad?”

“You’re not dying,” I said with a smile. “I was just a little freaked out. My dad told me you were okay, but I had to see it for myself. I had to make sure you were okay.”

“When did the accident happen?” she asked.

“Last night,” I told her. “It’s been almost a full day.”

“Damn,” she said with a shake of her head before wincing. “Ouch.”

“Concussion,” I reminded her.

“Damn, I feel like shit,” she groaned.

“Let me see if you are ready for more pain meds,” I said. I walked out of her room and flagged down the nurse that had been nice to me when I arrived. She promised she would be in shortly.

When I returned to Dottie’s room, her eyes were closed but she wasn’t relaxed. I could see the pain on her face. I gently walked to her bedside once again and touched her hand. Even though the nurses and everyone else had told me she was okay, I wouldn’t believe it until she opened her eyes and spoke to me.
