Presley giggled as Rico and Peg—the goofy and perfect officiants—led the chicken dance, the lively music coming from the surrounding speakers. She joined in, as did all the others—Wallace, Sandy, Carly, and Vinny and their few guests.

Some of the King family members and staff had stopped by throughout the last hours, wishing them well and then departing. Zoey had soon followed. Most cited early morning work hours the next day.

With permission, Drake had invited Hunter, Evan, Thorne, and little Abby, making it a nice, fun way to get to know everyone. Sweeney—having made the gorgeous, two-tier chocolate ganache anniversary cake at the last minute—and her husband Oliver stayed on to help and now joined in the fun.

Presley marveled at the lively, redheaded cook and the salt and pepper jovial butler who treated Drake and his family like their very own children and Abby like their granddaughter. The love and devotion were mutual by the many warm interactions.

And they’d welcomed her with open arms, something that surprised her given the terrible trio’s reaction to her the other evening.

But Oliver and Sweeney were so down-to-earth, so giving.

That’s what kept Drake grounded. That’s who he had to always be there for him, especially after Braden. Presley silently thanked whoever for that blessing for Drake and his sisters.

“Come on.” Presley waved Drake to the makeshift dance floor by her side.

The King’s Cafe’s elegant fairy tale room had been decorated with pink and lavender streamers and balloons. Maggie, the owner of Forget Me Not, had outdone herself with the lilacs and peonies. Her therapy dog, Rhoda, had taken a great liking to Wallace and he in turn to her.

In the back of her mind, Presley had made a note to ask Maggie whether Rhoda did house calls and, if so, would see whether she was game to visit Wallace on a regular basis.

Surprisingly, Drake gave in, much to the coaxing of his family. “What? Don’t think I have it in me? I’ve got moves.”

“Show me.” Presley dared him, and he didn’t disappoint.

He flapped his arms like a chicken and even made clucking noises. “See, Margolis?”

His boyish grin warmed her. “Yay, you! Who would have guessed?” She mimicked his movements.

Abby’s laughter rang out as she danced along with them, the silly dance bringing the guests closer, bonding them all in this happy affair for the two devoted couples.

All evening, Presley replayed the moments she heard Drake’s words of wisdom to Wallace. So touching and sweet that they made her tear up, something she hated doing in front of others.

And her tender heart expanded to overflowing.

Drake volunteered to help out and surpassed any expectation she had. It wasn’t just a duty for him to perform or a condition of their fake fiancée pact. No, it meant something to him. This wounded little family who had lost so much and would lose even more touched him profoundly, it seemed.

That’s when she questioned everything.

The done with men thing.

Herself. Drake.

What they were doing. The continued lies they were telling to people they cared about.
