Like my patients, Mitchell’s patient had symbolized her childhood experiences in a dream that clearly conveyed the experience of having a parent who attempted to crush her individuality. Thus derepression of material from the antilibidinal ego is a powerful way to uncover the extent of developmental trauma suffered by the patient. Frequently, however, there are no dramatic dreams, and the therapist must rely on the development of a narrative history of the patient’s childhood that slowly uncovers the extent of parental failures that had to be dissociated.
