Chapter 14
âYouâre afraid Iâll say no.â
There it was. A knot of fear tied around two little letters. N. O. No. The word had the power to take Roryâs breath away. His tongue felt like sandpaper against the roof of his mouth and he couldnât work up enough spit to swallow. No words came. So he watched her, cop face in place, and said nothing.
Her hand smoothed the skin on his forehead before she cupped his cheek in her palm. âIâve never been in charge before.â
âYouâve always been in charge.â The admission whispered across the distance between them.
Delaney tilted her head, a curious chickadee in search of a grain of truth to feed upon, and her hand dropped back to perch on her lap. âWhy do I feel so out of control? Soâ¦reckless?â
âDonât you want to feel that way?â
She glanced away to stare out the windshield. âI donât know. Iâveâ¦Iâve always been the responsible one. Mom and Dad areâ¦old hippies. Thatâs the nicest way I can describe them. And youâve met Nessa and Keegan. Iâm the one who got up and made my lunch. But as often as not, I was late to school because everyone else was in charge. I couldnât walk to school alone or Iâd get in trouble. Then one day, I did it anyway. And nobody cared.â
He shouldnât have been surprised, knowing her as he did, but he was anyway. âHow old were you?â
âSix.â Delaney cut her eyes to glance at him before returning her stare to the traffic zipping past them. âI might be the youngest, but Iâve always felt like the oldest. The responsible one. I wanted to go to school. And I wanted college, so I worked my way through. But even then, I wasnât in charge. I wasnât in control of things.â
âYes, you were, Doc. And you still are. You might not have felt like you were, but youâve always been in charge. Being in control and being in charge are two different things, Delaney. You can be reckless and be in charge. All you have to do is let go.â
âIâ¦â He watched her breasts rise and fall as she inhaled deeply and sighed. âI canât let go. Iâm too afraid.â
Rory reached for her hand. Her skin felt cold and smooth, like satin, to his calloused fingertips. âIâll catch you.â
She turned to face him again, her eyes shining with unshed tears that glistened in the headlights flashing past. He tugged her closer and met her halfway.
âIâll catch you.â He reiterated the promise. âIâll always be there to catch you.â
Her lashes shuttered her eyes, dark lace shadowing her cheeks as she ducked her chin. âWhy do I get the feeling that youâve always been there to catch me when I fall?â
Rory brushed his lips across her forehead. âIâll always keep you safe, Delaney.â
âYou always have.â
âWill you come home with me?â
âYes.â
The knot in his gut unraveled and he kissed her again, slow and sweet and filled with promises. âHome,â he agreed.

Delaney bathed in the pool of moonlight spilling across the floor of his bedroom.
