I HAD ONE SPLIT SECOND to be aware of hot salt on my tongue, the flavor melding with stream water. Then the mate bond clicked into place. Molten lust flooded my belly. The scent of Ryder encircled me even though it was physically impossible to smell anything underwater.
My mateâs voice in my head was sweeter than Courtâs most decadent honey. âSkye.â
âRyder.â
The intensity of our connection made me suck in a deep breath...only, there was no air available to be inhaled. Water caught in my windpipe just as water slapped against my outside. A wall of water pushing us down, away from the surface. Down, past where the bottom of the stream should have been. Down, into pitch darkness.
We tumbled end over end, hands joined around the Kingmaker. My fingers started to slip free, then Ryderâs free arm was around my waist, his other hand clamping mine back around the swordâs hilt.
His strength let me focus on the only thing I could focus onânot sucking down another gulp of water, not choking on the liquid that already threatened my lungs. We spun for an eternity. Then, for the second time, Ryder dragged me up out of water before I could drown.
Air struck my face, but Iâd forgotten how to breathe it. I lay there in pitch darkness, cradled by Ryderâs arms and icy liquid. In the timelessness of Faery, did I really need oxygen?
Then his huge hand thumped against my back. âBreathe, damn you.â
âOur firstââa cough wracked meââendearment.â The final word came out in hiccuping syllables as I fought to inhale and exhale.
âDonât get smart with me.â Despite his words, I heard Ryderâs smile. âWeâll come up with pet names later. For now, please, breathe.â
Please from Ryder was as good as a lifelong commitment. The bond between us strengthened, deepening as my breathing eased back into regularity. For a moment, I thought I saw the connection physically glowing. Then I blinked and the mirage was gone.
âAll good?â He was invisible in the darkness, but his words reeked of worry.
Of worry and effort. It was hard enough to tread water on your lonesome. Treading water while holding up another person was stressing even Ryderâs reserves of strength.
âAll good,â I managed. âYou can let me go.â
He took me at my word, releasing me to keep my own head up. Swimming was something I excelled at, so that wasnât a problem. But I wasnât quite ready for our physical connection to disappear entirely. Reaching out with the hand I wasnât using to grip the Kingmaker slipped me lower in the water...and as my feet descended, I realized I was able to stand.
I didnât have to tell Ryder the ground was firm beneath us. He understood, either through his awareness of my body or via our mate bond. His efforts to keep afloat settled into stillness. All I could hear was his breathing. All I could see was darkness.
âNow what?â Ryder asked after one long moment.
âAssuming we can figure out where weâre located,â I answered, âfirst step is clothes.
