I kicked my way through a patch of giant dandelions, hardly paying attention to the tufted seeds float into the air. Anger fueled my quick steps. I was furious with Jasper and his lack of caring, and I was furious with myself for being unable to get what we needed from the mage.

Flynn wisely remained silent as I stomped through the forest. He had found his horse; the beast hadn’t wandered far from where we had left him. I didn’t ride with him. I couldn’t. My limbs felt like coiled springs ready to pop, and I needed to move.

Twigs snapped between my heavy footfalls as I continued to push through the forest. I wasn’t even certain I was going in the right direction but, at the moment, I didn’t care. Putting distance between myself and the cowardly mage was all I wanted to do.

I should have tried harder, but there had been no persuading Jasper. I could understand his need to protect his people. I just couldn’t understand how helping find a map would have put them in danger. The only small win we’d had was when the man had let us leave his hidden coven alive.

We had been so close to getting what we needed. How were we supposed to find the map without scrying? Soran was surely still searching for me, but I refused to use myself as bait. We needed to recover the map on our own terms.

I shoved my way through some low branches, the leaves rustling as I let them whip back to place behind me.

Flynn was several paces behind me, keeping his distance. Was he angry with me? Disappointed? This had been our one shot, and I had blown it. Perhaps I should have offered the mage a better deal, or been more understanding of his plight. Had I said or done the wrong things?

If I could, I would do it over and try again. Maybe if Margery hadn’t scorned the man by taking his magical cat, he would have been more willing. I shook my head. No. I had a feeling the mage still wouldn’t have helped us. He cared about his small group of people, and nothing else.

My eyes burned, and I blinked, surprised by the tears of frustration. I hadn’t cried from anger in so long, and feeling like a child only made it worse. I quickened my pace, wanting to run from my failure and keep Flynn from seeing me. Alathiel and Margery had been counting on me. How could I tell them I hadn’t succeeded?

Settling the burden on my shoulders wasn’t fair, but realizing I was angry about it only made me feel more like a child. I had responsibilities. I had a task to complete, and I failed. I sniffed and swiped my fingers across my cheeks, brushing away the tears. A branch caught my foot, and I stumbled but caught myself and continued on. My throat constricted as my mind yelled, “Failure!” over and over again. I tripped again, my blurry vision making it harder to see obstructions in my path.
