Edie stood silently as the front door closed behind Tristan. Zain and Sebastian were talking quietly. Greer, Abby, and Layne were grinning at her while Dylan and Walker were frowning.
Edie felt as if sheâd run an emotional marathon in the past hour. When her brother had hugged her and freed her from the fear that heâd be mad at her for moving on, it had released the floodgates of emotions sheâd kept bottled up.
âOh, Edie,â Layne said as she grabbed Edieâs hand. âHeâs perfect for you.â
âI must admit, I didnât see an assassin in your future. I thought school teacher or something,â Greer told her. âBut Tristan is so much better for you.â
âYouâre alive again,â Layne said simply. âEver since you met him, youâve changed. Heâs helped you find yourself and I have to support that. Plus, heâs totally hot.â
âI like his dry sense of humor. I agree. I love him for you,â Abby added. âNow, weâll just handle this little coup and you can live happily ever after.â
Edie shook her head. âI feel so stupid. I had no idea what you did. Greer, I thought you were a policy advisor to the president. Abby, I thought you worked on the farm. I thought Dylan was just a retired soldier.â
âDonât feel stupid. Keeneston only knows because we had to have a home base and, well, youâve met the people from Keeneston. They would figure it out anyway so the president gave us permission to fill them in,â Abby explained to her.
âSpeaking of the president,â Greer said as she pulled out her phone. âAs soon as I see the evidence Tristan has, I need to call him. For all that I do, I am still one of his advisors. This is about to become a political pissing match and the U.S. will stand with its allies.â
Edie took a deep breath to rein in the wild emotions she was experiencing. âYou donât have to do this. You all are putting too much on the line for me. All that money, all the politics of this. Itâs too much.â
âEdie,â Layne said, grabbing her hand and forcing Edie to look up. âYou might live in Shadows Landing, but you are very much a part of Keeneston too. Youâre family and we will always help family.â
âBut Sebastian,â Edie began to say. Sebastian seemed to hear his name as he looked up from where he was talking to Zain and pinned her with his gaze.
âWhat about me?â
âYouâre doing too much. I canât ask you to put all that money at risk to help Tristan and me. You donât even know me well and you certainly donât know him.â
âYou have a silent strength I saw the night we met. I respect that. Plus, my wife thinks the world of you. Thatâs enough in my book. As I said, Iâm getting something out of this too.â
Edie shook her head at him even as her heart swelled with gratitude. âYou try to pretend youâre not, but youâre a good man, Sebastian.
