When everyone leaves and I’m left with Cade and Eric, you can feel the tension in the air. They both hate each other, that’s quite obvious.

“So you are just willing to forget everything that happened? You’re all done with me now that he’s back?” Eric spits.

“Hey.” I walk towards him and grab his hand. “We’re still friends and you’re part of my life, Eric. You always will be.” I squeeze his hand and kiss his cheek.

“You two were together?” Cade finally speaks.

I say “No” and Eric says “Yes” at the same time.

Cade looks at us, puzzled. “It’s not what you think. We never dated, we…” I pause, trying to come up with a way to say ‘we have crazy hot sex occasionally.’

“Don’t even say it,” Cade says. “I would prefer not to know.”

“Why? You jealous because I’ve had Layla in every way imaginable for the past four years?” Eric retorts. Cade’s face turns a shade of red, his anger coming off in waves.

“Shut your fucking mouth, Eric; she’s mine and always has been. I have her mind, body, and soul. You may have had her body for a little while, but her heart never belonged to you!”

Shit, that was a low blow. Eric looks hurt.

“Just stop, okay? I’m not allowing you two to start this up again. Eric, you know I love you and I don’t want to lose you, but I’m with Cade. I love him,” I explain and he nods.

“I know you do, babe, but the fact of the matter is it’s inevitable that he will hurt you again. And when he does, I will be here like always.” Eric leans in to kiss my forehead and I hear Cade actually growl.

“Don’t count on it,” Cade yells back as we watch Eric leave. He gets in his car and peels out, clearly upset.

Cade pulls me to his side and I go willingly, knowing this is my safe haven here in his arms.

“I’m sorry he was so blunt, Cade. I really just needed someone.”

“I know, baby; I just wish that it was me, that’s all,” Cade murmurs.

“Do you love him, Layla? Tell me the truth.”

“I do love him, Cade, but not as much as I love you,” I admit in all honesty.

“I need to get going. I’m exhausted and have a long day at work tomorrow. I’m so behind on everything,” I explain.

“Okay, baby. I can follow you there to make sure you get in all right,” he suggests, and I smile warmly.

“Kissing me goodbye should suffice.” I lean in and welcome his lips as they mold to mine. He kisses me slowly and then pulls away all too quickly.

“I’ll call you tomorrow; I have meetings and a book signing this weekend. But I should be free most nights if you want to hang out.”

“Wait a minute, you’re okay to just carry on like you didn’t just pass out from a panic attack, and almost got killed, might I add?” he exclaims.

“Cade, it happens, okay? That wasn’t my first attack and I’m sure it won’t be my last.
