The ROC continued as an essential part of Britain’s air defences especially with the coming of the V-weapons in 1944. Many OC posts were issued with ‘Snowflake’ illuminating rocket flares to fire from the ground to alert RAF fighters to the location of V-1 flying bombs; they also tracked V-2 rockets.

Shelters

Mindful of the dangers presented by air raids, schemes for the protection of the population were developed from the late 1930s. The Anderson shelter (named after Sir John Anderson, the Minister for ARP) was introduced as a domestic garden shelter. Made from six curved and straight panels of galvanised corrugated steel. Once assembled the basic model, with internal dimensions 6ft 6in long by 4ft 6in wide by 6ft high, was designed to accommodated four to six people. The first Anderson shelter was erected in a garden in Islington on 25 February 1939. Issued free to all householders who earned less than £250 a year, those in receipt of a higher income were charged £7. Some 1.5 million shelters were distributed to people in danger areas considered liable to air raids by September 1939, over 3 million Anderson shelters were issued over the course of the war. Dug well into the garden to a depth of 2 to 4ft and covered with plenty of earth over the top of the arch to a minimum of 15in, these shelters proved a very good defence from the shock waves of bombs.

A couple entering their Anderson shelter with cash box of valuables and important paperwork, bedding and suitcase of clothes and essentials in case they were bombed out. The white cross and dots help them find it in the dark.
