mise could dissuade him. Finally I cut the lock off the gate. He replaced it. I cut it off again. And again. Hostilities escalated when he placed his feedlot adjacent to the creek, polluting our drinking water. Once we nearly came to blows when we both happened to be near the disputed gate. I would have welcomed a good old-fashioned fist fight, but he has the advantage of money to squander on lawyers so he backed off. The matter drags on year after year. Every time I ride past the gate on my horse I get angry. On the days when I am wrestling with more demons than usual or bickering with my wife I go up and cut the damn lock off again and drive my truck on the road to assert my claim. Most recently, I hiked up the mountainside and rolled boulders on the road, blocking his way. In the process I strained myself so badly that I was in pain for nearly a month. But I had my revenge. Over the years I have become habituated to my enemy. He is never very far from mind. Whenever something unexpected happens —a fence broken, the creek muddied, a tool missing —my first thought is of him. I make him the scapegoat, the immediate explanation, the first cause of all my trouble, the snake in my garden. In my lucid moments I wonder whether I would be disappointed if he took the lock off the gate and started acting in a neighborly way.
