Tristan

When I dropped Ivy and Theo off at camp, I observed the other parents doing the same, and it made me contemplate my own future as a father. It was a rare thought for me, as I had always believed I was more suited to having furry children. My feelings about the prospect of having kids of my own were gradually evolving. Perhaps it was because the idea of finding the right life partner was resurfacing in my mind, especially now that Lori and I were on good terms.

Nevertheless, I constantly reminded myself that Lori was just a tourist, and I had no intention of trying to pursue a romantic relationship. I was determined not to cross that bridge.

I decided to drop Luna home and knock off a few items from my work to-do list since I was already out and about. My plan was to visit several of the small restaurants and businesses that had been integral parts of the Southside Beach community for years. I had a specific purpose in mind: to gauge their feelings regarding Magnitude Holdings’ proposed development. I wanted to connect with the long-time residents, fellow surfers, and local business owners to gain insights into their perspectives.

My hope was to rally a group of dedicated locals who shared the same passion for preserving the beach. This place meant a great deal to many people, and I was determined to stop a big corporation from ruining it with its superficial ideas.

My first stop took me to Neptune, a cozy beachfront restaurant renowned for its mouthwatering seafood. Stepping through the door, the aroma of salty sea air and grilled fish enveloped me. Neptune never had a single breakfast item on their menu, and that’s why I loved this spot since I was more of a brunch guy myself.

I approached the owner, Sam, who had been the heart and soul of this place for decades. I was greeted with his warm smile, and we shook hands. Sam was well into his fifties but possessed the vitality of someone half his age. His love for fishing was evident in the freshness of the seafood he served—some of which he caught himself. Sam wasn’t just a business owner; he was an integral part of our community, and his opinions mattered a great deal to me.

“Hey there, Sam,” I took a seat at the counter.

“Hi Tristan, not usual to see you this early, man. What can I get you?” he asked as he was polishing a glass.

“I actually didn’t come to eat. I wanted to share some concerning news.”

“What news, kid?”

“Have you heard of Magnitude Holdings? It’s a nationwide construction company. They want to build condos and malls here in Southside Beach, turning this place into a commercial hub with chain restaurants and all that … stuff.”

“No, I haven’t heard anything. That sounds crazy. Why would they want to do that here, of all places?” Sam said, his expression grim.

“That’s what I said. These developments could change our community forever if we don’t do something.
