Chapter Fifteen

“That’s a fine mess your client got herself into.” Redd took a sip from his mug and made a face.

“Sorry the tea isn’t great,” said Arthur. “My wife does a better job at making it. Unfortunately, she’s at work. I don’t know how hers ends up better—it’s a relatively straightforward process.”

“It’s fine,” said Redd. “I’m not much of a tea drinker anyway, unless it’s sweet tea. She left us some nice banana bread. I ain’t complainin’.”

“It is good. Anyway, yes, the whole Frankie thing is a mess. And we have to do something quickly.”

Redd’s expression was solemn, but his eyes gleamed. “So, do you have a plan?”

“A basic plan, yes.”

“Lay it on me.”

“Okay. First, let me tell you what I know. The thugs that tried to attack Frankie are part of what seems to be a small-ish crime ring that has its hooks in several surrounding neighborhoods.”

“Seems to be?”

“Yeah. It’s not on the FBI’s radar, which points to it being local and self-contained. There’s only one major player, as far as I can see, and only a few people answer to him directly.”

“But?”

“But … Frankie mentioned she saw crates of guns in the bodega. Not just a few guns. Crates full.”

“Yeah, that sounds big-league.”

“And there’s one other thing.” Arthur pulled a photo of Scarf-Face from a manila envelope and set it on the table. “This is the boss of the operation. He’s smart enough to cover his face and drive rental cars. My FBI contact couldn’t make a definite ID from this photo. But the guy does remind him of a person of interest who fell off their radar. Same style of dress, same height, same build, same way of covering his face. If this guy is who my contact suspects he is, he has ties to some nasty and powerful people, and the feds would like to stay on top of him.”

“So, there could be much more to this.”

“Yes. We need to find everything we can on him.”

Redd nodded. “What are these guys into? That we know of?”

“A little of everything. Drugs, guns, loan sharking, stolen checks and credit cards.” He pulled more photos from a manila envelope and spread them out. “Here are the other key players.” He waved his hand over pictures of the three thugs. “These are the enforcers. My FBI contact could only identify this one. His name is Hector Solis, and he has a rap sheet a mile long. Nothing the feds would get too excited about, though.

“This guy,” he said, pointing to a photo of Sunglasses, “Is Freddy Ferrero. He owns the bodega and several other businesses in the strip mall. I’m betting they’re all money laundering fronts, and that he manages them all. His record’s pretty clean—a couple of arrests for bar fights, a couple for possession. Some warrants for unpaid parking tickets. That kind of thing. A good choice for the face of the business. Charming, smart, confident, and no one the cops would watch too closely.

“This guy,” Arthur pointed at Wingtips.
