Play with drips, color shifts, and brush strokes.
Freely move your wrist and spatter with lighter grays.
The orange spatter vibrates on the gray canvas.
layer one tips
○ Working on more than one canvas at a time will keep your hands moving and your brain engaged. While one is drying, you can keep working on the next!
○ Working on two canvases, paint one in a vertical format and the other in a horizontal format; see what appeals to you most.
○ Acrylic paints in jars are often easier to dip your brush into, which will keep you in the moment, engaging your instincts and moving quickly.
○ Use an opposite color for spattering—try orange, just for kicks. Notice the colors vibrating together.
○ For interest, use your paper plate palette to slightly adjust the color each time you put the brush to the canvas.
○ While you are having fun spattering, keep in mind that you might get some paint on the walls or things around you—and maybe even on yourself! You may need a drop cloth or some plastic to keep things from getting spattered. (My studio is full of spatter, which I like, but you may want to be a little more careful to not get paint all over your things.)
○ The more of your personality and your energy you can get on the canvas, the better. I call it “juice”—put some juice on your canvas!
○ Wear an old paint shirt or apron to protect your clothes; you want to feel free and uninhibited. My favorite: a dorky turquoise plaid shirt that belonged to my grandfather. Granddad painted beautiful florals in oil paint after he retired; to this day, when I smell turpentine I always think kindly of him. I love the little spots of oil paint he left on the shirt, and I wear it often for good luck!
