Chapter Nine

Kate

I was looking forward to seeing Sunny again, some more of that complicated girl talk that is so much better still than having to walk on eggshells around the old/new boys’ fragile egos.

I really, truly like her.

My stomach lurches when I see the serious expression on her face.

“Kate, we need to talk,” she says softly.

“Will I still have an appetite afterwards?”

She doesn’t react to the lame attempt of a joke. I’m not joking. I feel sick already.

“It’s about Juno.”

“He’s a nuisance, but he’s also doing his job. As long as it stays that way, I can handle him.”

I can already tell that’s not it. Sunny wouldn’t seek me out because Juno annoys her. That’s pretty much a given around here.

No.

“You might want to sit down.”

I prefer to stand.

“Look, I’m not judging you. I won’t show this to anyone, but I can’t guarantee that the next reporter Juno chats to won’t, so you might want to think of a strategy. I can help you if you want.”

I don’t want to ask, but in my position, I can’t do with any nebulous questions. I need to hear the truth.

“It would help if you tell me exactly what this is.”

She holds my gaze unflinchingly. “Photographs. Intimate stuff, but you can guess that already. That is something that would probably go away, as many people would be more appalled by the invasion of privacy. I’m more worried about the credit card receipts that show you paying an escort service.”

Wow. I feel winded enough to sit down indeed, fold my hands in my lap. I am the one avoiding her gaze now, because I need to think. It’s too much.

Distraction.

Hoping Sunny could be that for me, so temptation wouldn’t rise up again. Sunny finding out about all of it in the span of hours, because Juno hates me enough.

It’s all falling apart. I can’t go down that road anymore, and Sunny—she’s probably disgusted. There might be a way to buy Juno’s silence, but I’d rather punch him. Repeatedly.

“At this point, it’s all damage to your image, and it’s certainly possible to spin that if push comes to shove. I have something in mind, but I need to know everything. Kate?”

I finally dare look at her, and see nothing but concern in her expression.

I have to say something.

“All right. I guess there go all my chances with you. I understand if you’re kind of appalled now.”

“Kate, come on, that’s none of my business.” She seems surprised that I could even think such a thing. Should I hold on to some hope, or would it be foolish? “Let’s sit down and talk about what we can do. I have a source on this, but anything you have on Juno would be helpful.”

I shake my head. “There’s no point. He’s too careful. Sure, he has affairs, but as far as I know, he never forced anyone—which I’m glad about, because I don’t want that kind of atmosphere in my business.”

“One of your officers is blackmailing you. That’s not good either.
