Awakening Kundalini Shakti
Your physical body is just one of your many bodies. You have a subtle nervous system with an entire complex of nadis (nerve tubes) and chakras (nerve plexuses) running through it. Prana, in the form of nerve currents, travels through ten of the nadis, energizing the body.
Of the 72,000 nadis, the one most vital to pranic energy is kundalini shakti (serpent power or mystic coil). Normally kundalini is asleep, coiled near the tail bone at brahmarandhra mukha (mukha means mouth), the base of the nerve tube sushumna nadi, which runs through the spinal cord into the brain, until it reaches brahmarandhra, a nerve complex at the top and middle of the head, about five fingers back from the hairline. Sushumna is usually closed at the lower end, with no prana passing through it.
Two nadis (nerves), ida and pingala, wrap around the sushumna like a caduceus. They correspond to the left and right sympathetic cords in the body, which control afferent (sensory, which carries sensations to the central nervous system) and efferent (motor, which carries commands to the body) nerve currents.
Prana normally flows through ida and pingala. Pranayama can force prana to withdraw from ida and pingala, open sushumna nadi, flow into it, and travel up the spine. The rising kundalini awakens supernormal powers. When it reaches brahmarandhra at sahasrara chakra (thousandpetaled lotus), Yoga (divine union) is achieved and limits of time, space, and causation are transcended.
Some ways to awaken kundalini shakti are devotion, worship, meditation, will power, discernment, knowledge, and body purification. Any manifestation of spiritual gifts or supernormal powers indicates kundalini is awakened to some degree.
Kundalini shakti is personified as the Divine Mother: Shakti Ma, Kali Ma, or other female deities. She's the feminine power at the base of the spine, which unites with the masculine power in the brain, her consort, Lord Shiva. The divine union of Shiva with Shakti in the sahasrara chakra is likened to a sexual coupling or a marriage. This union of opposites is a powerful symbol depicted in all cultures (see Figure 9a).
