Lack of sunlight
We humans spend a lot less time in the natural sunlight as we did a few years ago. Our lifestyles make it difficult for us to get enough sunlight. Perhaps you work in a building where you only get a few minutes to go out into the fresh air, or not even that. We are surrounded by artificial light sources, which influence our metabolic processes, such as our pineal gland. Our four seasons have an effect on our hormone balance and our moods.
Studies have shown that in the winter months, our Serotonin levels are lower than in the months with more sunlight. This could be an explanation why the so-called winter depression occurs. It has a significant influence on our Melatonin production, which regulates our sleep-wake rhythm and our Serotonin level which ensures good spirits.
How often do you go for a walk? My answer to this question was that it was much too seldom. The more I went for a walk, the more I noticed that it did me good and so I started to walk more regularly. Particularly in the winter months, it was difficult for me to force myself. I was driving to work in the dark and driving home at night. Then I started using my lunch break to get out of the building and get some daylight. It is unbelievable what difference this little change made to my well-being.
