Almost an outer suburb of Hobart, this pleasant seaside town sits just beyond the city limits. Its literary claim to fame is that Nobel Laureate Patrick White holidayed at Kingston Beach as a child.

Shot Tower One of the state’s most historic industrial buildings (with a National Trust ‘A’ classification), completed in 1870. Kingston Beach: popular, family-friendly beach with plenty of shade and nice cafes nearby; 3 km SE. Kingston Beach Golf Course: well-regarded 18-hole course with specific holes picked by international players as their favourites; 1 Channel Hwy; (03) 6229 8300; Boronia Hill Flora Trail: 2 km track follows ridge line between Kingston and Blackmans Bay through remnant bush; begins at end of Jindabyne Rd and finishes at Peter Murrell Reserve, renowned for its many native orchids; Kingston.

Blackmans Bay blowhole: small blowhole at the northern end of the beach that is spectacular in stormy weather; Blowhole Rd; 7 km S. Alum Cliffs walk: excellent scenic 45 min return walk from Browns River area along the coastal cliffs to Taroona.

Margate Train: 1950s passenger train (non-operational) with tearooms in the buffet car, and collectibles, lollies and book shops in other carriages. Sun market; 1567 Channel Hwy, Margate; 9 km S. Tinderbox Marine Reserve: follow the underwater snorkel trail; Tinderbox; 11 km S. Scenic drives: south through Blackmans Bay, Tinderbox and Howden, with magnificent views of Droughty Pt, South Arm Peninsula, Storm Bay and Bruny Island from Piersons Pt.
