The 15th of September [1636] the officials here issued to the entire citizenry a very pointed order from His Princely Highness Count Georg.2 The substance was that the city and district of Schmalkalden should pay to his Princely Highness 10,000 talers within two months without any argument, and that if anyone protested, complained, or said it was impossible, he should be prosecuted and severely punished. Because nobody was allowed to gripe about it, in the city 4 talers were assessed for every hundred in property [i.e., 4 percent of the assessed tax value], which the Jews also paid, as well as having to pay another 5 talers for the Jewish head tax.
