By Memory?
Letâs drill down further on Ciceroâs thoughts about memory and consider some advice dealt with to some extent in our previous chapters. While classic orators like Cicero delivered speeches from memory, todayâs executive public speakerâunless you have special abilityâtypically does not have the time or the patience to memorize an entire 17- to ÂÂ18-minute business speech.
Seldom would this be necessary:
⢠If your speech is well constructed. Itâs relatively easy to speak from notes and maintain adequate eye contact if the speech is logical and strongly expressive to begin with.
⢠If you take the time to internalize the fundamental approach, structure, and style of the speech, including key words and expressions.
⢠If for an ÂÂin-person talk you rehearse the speech out loud at least three times, once or twice in front of a willing, if not also ÂÂwell-trained listener, and at least once ÂÂon-camera so you can see and hear yourself on video.
⢠If you mark your notes with cues for eye contact, pauses, stage directions, and indications of expression (such as to âsmileâ), perhaps to vary your voice level, and to gesture at key points.
⢠If for an online speech you rehearse ÂÂon-camera all three times, paying attention to details about: (1) your appearance, (2) your use of notes, and (3) your performance overall including eye contact with the camera.
⢠If you try to memorize the opening of your speech, as well as the summary and conclusion. Any work to do so will boost the effectiveness of your remarks.
