Chapter Nine – Misha

Though the television set was on across from me, I wasn’t really watching whatever was on the screen. Some stupid movie about oversized alligators. My mind was elsewhere, although I was pretty sure the people in the movie were feeding sharks some kind of growth stimulant to get them to fight the big alligators, but that just seemed like a fucking stupid idea.

But then again, weren’t movies all about stupid ideas? Kind of like real life.

Take Celene, for example. It was a fucking stupid idea to get close to her, let alone get close to her while every other heir seemed keen on gluing themselves to her side, my sister included. Oh, everyone had fallen under her spell immediately, and if they didn’t, like Slade, something inevitably happened and caused him to fall to his knees before her just like everybody else.

She wasn’t so special, was she? I mean, don’t get me wrong, she was pretty, but pretty girls were a dime a dozen in this city. Go out at night, go to the clubs, and you could find more girls willing to spread their legs for you than you could handle. One of the perks of being a Black Hand heir.

I wasn’t a partier. I didn’t go to clubs or parties. I steered clear of them unless I was needed at them, like babysitting Piper. My sister was old enough to take care of herself, but lately my parents had felt like she needed someone watching her.

And with Slade’s tongue being mysteriously cut out and someone stalking me on the roads whenever they got a chance, I agreed with them.

So here I was, at my parents’ house, babysitting Piper and Celene. They’d gone back to her room some time ago. I wasn’t worried about my sister falling for Celene’s magic; I didn’t think Celene swung my sister’s way, but I guess you never knew. They could be getting down and dirty in her room and I’d never know.

I didn’t want to know, actually, because I tried my hardest not to think about Celene at all. Not what she did, not what she thought, and definitely not how she looked in the dark clothes and red lipstick she usually wore. No, anytime that girl crossed my mind, I did whatever I had to do to get her out of it.

She was getting enough dick, and I wasn’t going to trip over myself to worship the ground she walked on like the others. Hell, even Nix seemed infatuated with her, and until recently, I’d thought he was a partier like Jett. The two of them used to be inseparable.

Before Celene, anyway.

Besides, the girl was a few years too young for my tastes, damn near my sister’s age. The only reason I wasn’t already tied down was because the Black Hand severely lacked female heirs.
