CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

O’Reilly was woken the next morning by an ungodly screech. He shot up in bed and everything was silent. A few seconds passed and he heard it again. It sounded like it was right outside his window. He got up and opened the curtains. Two ginger toms were facing off in the garden. The hair on Bram’s back was standing straight up, and he was baring his teeth. O’Reilly had never seen him look so feral. He really did resemble a wild thing.

Bram’s display seemed to do the trick. The cat O’Reilly knew was called Timothy backed off and darted into the undergrowth between the two apartments.

“That’s my boy,” O’Reilly said.

He wondered if he would get another visit from the petty neighbour. He decided that if he did, he would use Bram as an example. He went to the bathroom and looked at his reflection in the mirror. He bared his teeth, but it didn’t quite have the same effect as Bram’s show of dominance.

He made some tea and took it outside to the small garden. It was not yet seven, but it was already very warm, and it promised to be another glorious day on the island. O’Reilly sat down on one of the chairs around the table and thought back to the conversation with Victoria in the Red Snapper. He hadn’t given it a second thought when he’d agreed to move in with her in Vazon, and only now were the implications of that starting to take hold. He was starting to realise how complicated things became when money and property was involved. He decided the marriage to Victoria would be free from those sorts of complications. The house would remain in her name, and they could start their new life together in a simple fashion.

Something occurred to O’Reilly during the walk to work. It was something that he hadn’t dwelled upon earlier but in light of the recent developments between himself and Victoria Radcliffe it was brought to the surface. He recalled the conversation with Jane Dodds yesterday and something she’d mentioned came back to him. Jane told him her house had been sold, and she also said the lawyer came round earlier with the papers for her to sign. O’Reilly realised this was quite odd. Jane had used the possessive determiner my when she’d spoken about the house. She was the one who’d signed the papers pertaining to the sale of the house. This could only mean one thing: Jane was the sole owner of number 6 Rue La Mere.

O’Reilly turned onto La Grange and instead of taking the road that led to the station he carried on walking until he reached the beach road. Something was bothering him, and he needed some sea air to help him to clear up what it was that was niggling at his insides. He stepped onto the sand and made his way towards the sea. It was still early but a few people were already enjoying the morning sun on the beach.
