STEP 6 | Natural Law
“To lose confidence in one’s body is to lose confidence in oneself.”
SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR
Up until this point we have looked only at what we already know about ourselves: that we identify as individuals (the “I”), with unique patterns of thought (those mind games) and behavior (the things we do)—and that from this place we form relationships with other people. Most importantly we recognize that we primarily live in our heads and rarely visit the NOW.
Here at Step 6, just past the midpoint of our journey and on the first step in the World of Body, you are going to slow down and spend some time exploring your self through your physical form. What may at first seem a more abstract and mystical world you’ll come to realize is far more real than anything your mind could ever offer.
We now enter a world governed by “Natural Law,” where our thinking blends and merges with the laws of nature. We will learn about our strengths and weaknesses through ancient wisdom—the Law of Five Elements and the Law of Midday/Midnight. And discover that in spite of thinking that our existence and the way we are are largely down to “us,” in fact we only exist by the grace of nature’s great plan and subject to her laws.
How we steer a steady course as we make our way Home to Peace is dependent on maintaining equilibrium. The pendulum, you will remember, taught us about the perils of getting lost in mental and emotional swings—in the push and pull of the thinking world. Now that we’ve stepped up and away from a mind-dominated reality we will begin to gain an awareness that a life lived from the World of Body governed by Natural Law is effortless—and that equilibrium is the natural process that will deliver us to the door of Home.
Let’s start by looking at the philosophical backdrop to Natural Law. I want to emphasize here that there is no need for you to fully understand every aspect of what is described. At Step 6 our goal is not to gather more knowledge; but rather to retreat from our already over-burdened minds—so I’ll keep it as simple as possible.
