In January 2018, an FDA panel voted in support of a claim by cigarette company Phillip Morris that its iQOS vaping system reduces exposure to harmful chemicals because it heats tobacco but doesn’t ignite it. However, the panel did not endorse the company’s claim that this system reduces the user’s risk for tobacco-related diseases.

Diacetyl is a buttery-flavored chemical sometimes found in popcorn, caramel, potato chips, crackers, corn chips, and many dairy products. In 2007, the country’s major popcorn manufacturers began removing it from their products after they discovered the workers in the factory were getting sick from breathing it in. In fact, diacetyl has been linked to hundreds of cases of bronchiolitis obliterans, a serious and irreversible lung disease. This disease is sometimes called popcorn lung.
