On our first date, Ana stops me from taking a sip of a bodega coconut water that somebody has clearly opened and then put back.

She is my hero.

On our second date, we start talking to each other like an imaginary old Jewish couple.

This is when I begin to fall in love with her.

Our third date is the night of the 2016 election.

Ana’s a journalist, and when they call it she’s sent to report outside the tower.

At 3 a.m. she comes over and we hold each other and talk for hours.

Lots of couples are breaking up or getting together tonight, and we’re the latter.

Ana divides her time between New York and Washington, DC, until she eventually moves to DC to report on Capitol Hill full time. At her going away party, we say some famous last words:
