We have previously referred to the OSI 7 Layer model to describe the architecture of a communications network. The OSI 7 Layer model is the holy grail of formalising the concepts of every aspect of a network from the application to the physical connection and all the network components in between. The fact that pragmatic and commercial forces have honed the OSI model to what we have today still leaves the ideal as a valuable framework to view the workings of any network, be it your home computer setup, the office network or global Internet. The OSI 7 Layer model defines seven independent layers as follows:
