When Brogan awoke, he was back in the castle at the foot of the grand staircase. The cold was even more extreme than before though he was certain the outside temperature wasn’t nearly so low. Laura was lying beside him on the floor, shivering. He wrapped his arms around her and didn’t even think of trying the interior door to the ballroom or the door leading outside again. Glancing at the handles of each, he could see small bolts of electricity emanating from the iron. The castle wasn’t through with them yet.

“Come on, Laura. Wake up, love. We have to go.” Even as he said the words, a deathlike black frost crept toward them from all directions. There was only one urn with a flame burning within it now. The other two flames were extinguished and he truly believed that their journeys would never be done until he could piece together what some entity wanted of him. The next time, they might not come back to the castle at all, just as they hadn’t when they’d left their Roman reality. The castle was their anchor, but he was almost certain it would be pulled away by some unseen force that was rapidly losing patience with his failure to acknowledge something. And now, because of the grim frost approaching from all sides, he wouldn’t even have the time to shout out a question to their invisible tormentor. Their clothing was nowhere to be seen, so he assumed they weren’t meant to have it back yet. Still, the icy-cold blackness kept moving toward them. Brogan felt Laura awakening but picked her up in his arms and quickly climbed up the staircase. The ominous black ice was meant to keep him climbing. It followed threateningly so he would. “What was that you said about the castle not wanting to hurt us,” he demanded as he carried her upstairs.

“I could have been wrong about that,” she murmured, finally coming to her senses.

He deposited her on her feet in the tower room and slammed the door behind them. Even as high as they were, with the autumn wind blowing through the now open windows, they were still much warmer than whatever was creeping up the stairs. He could only hope the door was enough to keep the iciness at bay, and that this was where the castle wanted them. It would seem it was since there was no other way to escape. As he’d climbed up the stairs, even the hallways to the other rooms were frozen over. Icicles hung from the roof like upside-down steeples. It was as if they’d encountered their own personal ice age within the walls of the ancient domicile that might just become their tomb.

Fully awake and staying close to Brogan for warmth, Laura shook her head in confusion. “I don’t understand this. If the castle is possessed with some kind of magic, and if it could have killed us…why didn’t it? It makes no sense unless there’s something it wants of us.
