Chapter Eight
From the Heart
Lady
A few days had passed since Champ delivered the devastating news of his plans to leave the city. I couldnât help but be in my feelings. To pull me out of my funk, Shayla dragged me to the mall to shop for maternity clothes. At five and a half months pregnant, she was already halfway through her pregnancy. I wish I couldâve said Iâd started to come around to the idea of a new baby, but I still hadnât.
Shayla pulled her water bottle away from her lips before huffing. âCan you believe Iâm almost six months pregnant? I canât!â
âMe either. You and Daddy got a name picked out yet?â
âOf course, Judge wants to name the baby after him.â
I turned away to roll my eyes. Shayla was the only person who called my father Judge. It was her pet name for himâeither that or a poor excuse to throw her elite status around wherever she went. At forty, she was over twenty years younger than my father. Looking back, he mustâve been going through a midlife crisis at the time or something.
âAnd what do you want?â I probed.
âIâm fine with whatever he wants as long as the baby is healthy. Thatâs my only priority.â
I dipped my chin. âRight.â
âWith the new baby coming, Iâm trying to get your father to bulk up our security system at the house. You know a lot of shit comes behind holding such a prestigious position,â she stated, being frank.
I rolled my eyes. âYeah. I know.â
Why in the hell is she talking to me as if sheâs been around my father longer than I have? As a kid, I remembered when we got our first alarm system after Daddy was elected judge. It shook me because I thought it meant someone wanted to hurt him or us because of a ruling heâd given. The new baby would share those same memories of death threats and having the cops post up outside our home as a safety precaution.
âCan I ask you something?â
âSure. What?â
âHow was your father when you were growing up? Like, was he the type who was so consumed in his work that he was never around, or was he more like the type that never missed a basketball game?â
âI mean, Daddy has always been a busy man. He may not have been at every tennis match or ballet recital, but he was as consistent as most of my friendâs dads, if not more.â
âOh. Okay, thanks.â
Hearing the uneasy tone in her voice, I decided to dig a little deeper. âSeeing as Daddyâs workload is pretty crazy... Do you think heâll be around to help you much when the baby comes?â
âHe said heâd take the first couple of weeks off.â
âAnd then?â I quizzed, brow arched.
âAnd then⦠Iâll be on my own. Well, Iâll still have you there to help.â
I tilted my head to the side while stepping onto the escalator, going to the mall's second level. âWhat if I wasnât around?â
She snapped her neck to look at me.
