Chapter Eight

From the Heart

Lady

A few days had passed since Champ delivered the devastating news of his plans to leave the city. I couldn’t help but be in my feelings. To pull me out of my funk, Shayla dragged me to the mall to shop for maternity clothes. At five and a half months pregnant, she was already halfway through her pregnancy. I wish I could’ve said I’d started to come around to the idea of a new baby, but I still hadn’t.

Shayla pulled her water bottle away from her lips before huffing. “Can you believe I’m almost six months pregnant? I can’t!”

“Me either. You and Daddy got a name picked out yet?”

“Of course, Judge wants to name the baby after him.”

I turned away to roll my eyes. Shayla was the only person who called my father Judge. It was her pet name for him—either that or a poor excuse to throw her elite status around wherever she went. At forty, she was over twenty years younger than my father. Looking back, he must’ve been going through a midlife crisis at the time or something.

“And what do you want?” I probed.

“I’m fine with whatever he wants as long as the baby is healthy. That’s my only priority.”

I dipped my chin. “Right.”

“With the new baby coming, I’m trying to get your father to bulk up our security system at the house. You know a lot of shit comes behind holding such a prestigious position,” she stated, being frank.

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah. I know.”

Why in the hell is she talking to me as if she’s been around my father longer than I have? As a kid, I remembered when we got our first alarm system after Daddy was elected judge. It shook me because I thought it meant someone wanted to hurt him or us because of a ruling he’d given. The new baby would share those same memories of death threats and having the cops post up outside our home as a safety precaution.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure. What?”

“How was your father when you were growing up? Like, was he the type who was so consumed in his work that he was never around, or was he more like the type that never missed a basketball game?”

“I mean, Daddy has always been a busy man. He may not have been at every tennis match or ballet recital, but he was as consistent as most of my friend’s dads, if not more.”

“Oh. Okay, thanks.”

Hearing the uneasy tone in her voice, I decided to dig a little deeper. “Seeing as Daddy’s workload is pretty crazy... Do you think he’ll be around to help you much when the baby comes?”

“He said he’d take the first couple of weeks off.”

“And then?” I quizzed, brow arched.

“And then… I’ll be on my own. Well, I’ll still have you there to help.”

I tilted my head to the side while stepping onto the escalator, going to the mall's second level. “What if I wasn’t around?”

She snapped her neck to look at me.
