Eve sat behind her desk, working busily on her computer. She'd delegated the duty of reporting their findings to Melborn, who enjoyed the task because it allowed him to control the retelling of events. Eve was usually glad to avoid it, but every now and then, as she worked, she would glance up and wonder if her partner was waiting for the right moment to bring everything he knew crashing down on her.

“I'll burn that bridge when I get to it,” Eve muttered to herself, inadvertently mixing up the phrases as she refocused on her new line of inquiry.

Once Melborn finished his report, they would drive out to the scene of Eloise Placer's murder and canvas the neighborhood for anyone who remembered her. The woman had only been dead two years, but she was pretty reclusive. Eve wasn't hopeful about finding close friends of the Placers in the neighborhood. More than anything, she wanted to see the house and scratch the vague itch in her mind that defied identification.

Eloise Placer had been discovered at 1421 Tree Bark Way in Petersburg, according to the police report, another vacant house. Her listed residence was 2303 Flint Street.

2303, Eve thought. That was a funny coincidence. The house that Mary Shetland and now Trinity Semple had been found in was 2303 Hazelnut Drive.

What about the Youngs? Eve pulled out the case file, opened it, and scanned through. Her eyes locked on the now absurdly familiar address.

2303 Flint Street.

Eve looked back at the Placer case file. At the time of her death, only two years ago, Eloise was listed as being a resident of the Youngs’ house at 2303 Flint Street.

They'd been dead for over a decade by then.

Had Eloise moved back into the house after the Youngs died and moved away? Had Frederic sold her the house? What had he done with the money?

Her mind tingled with the electric anticipation as she saw the pieces fitting together in front of her. She looked up the Young/Placer address in the FBI's GPS system.

The message came back: ERROR—INVALID ADDRESS.

Eve sighed and tried again. The same capital message blinked across her screen. Eve sat back, thinking, with her chin jut out at the computer in frustrated anti-climax. She tried a Google search and found that the only results were a real estate agency called Meriam, Logan, and Greenfield.

Their logo, a spartan "MLG" in red font, appeared in the corner of the page with the property listing. Eve had seen the same logo in the corner of the "For Sale" sign. She grinned wolfishly at her computer screen. She was on the right track.

2303 Flint Street appeared in multiple posts on the MLG property listing page, the oldest of which dated back to 2008. It hadn't sold that year.

Curious that Frederic had waited two years to put the house up on the market, Eve thought and again cursed the DEA for stealing such a critical witness from her at such a critical moment. She would have loved to know what was happening with the house during that time.
