CHAPTER
TEN
Macey couldnât bring himself to sleep that night. Not that he normally required much sleep, but tonightâs bout of insomnia was anything but normal. He checked the chronometer in the corner of his vision: almost five a.m. He hadnât managed to drift off for more than an hour at a time. It felt as if heâd been awake all night. Memories old and new clogged his mind, too vivid to be ignored.
He arose from the easy chair where he had been trying to sleep and wandered into the semi-darkness of the garage. The collection of vehicles stared back at him, their brightly colored affectations mesmerizing in the dull light. The greasy tang of motor oil filled his nostrils and turned his stomach. The place suddenly felt cramped. Or perhaps it was just his state of mind superimposing itself on his surroundings.
In either case, he needed some fresh air.
He ventured upstairs, past the hallway and the door to Sheilaâs room. He had heard crying coming from behind it. He contemplated knocking, but decided against it. Part of him felt like bursting through the door, taking her into his arms and promising her that everything would be all right, that he would stand by her, protect her, save her.
But that wasnât reality.
The truth was he had no idea how he was going to handle things with Sheila now that Virgil had entered the picture. A choice between his best friend of over seventy years, his brother in arms and in Christ, and a woman heâd just met but cared for greatly, maybe even loved.
He fixed his eyes on the door again. He needed to talk to her, to know exactly what she was feeling. It had been her silence in the face of all that he had revealed that had torn him up inside. What was going on inside her head? Had she lost faith in him? Did she hate him? Had he sunk to such a state that he could no longer make a clear decision about Virgil without caring how Sheila felt about him?
âI suppose you have,â he said aloud, just to hear it come from outside his head. âI suppose you have.â
Climbing the last flight of stairs, he emerged onto the rooftop of the garage, his skin bristling against the coolness of the early morning air. It was a relatively quiet night. A crescent moon hung low in the predawn sky, the jagged outline of light speckled skyscrapers set against a cool indigo hue. He blanked his mind as he focused on the coming sunrise, mental relief from the relentless onslaught of his thoughts.
A car passed below. A tune from its stereo knocked him back into reality. This wasnât going to work. He eyed the building across the street. He couldnât remember exactly what business was in it, but it didnât matter. His interest lay in its height.
Breaking into a sprint, Macey launched himself off the rooftop, vaulting across the two-way street with ease. His feet touched the edge
