Chapter 20

I recovered first, shaking my head to clear the tinnitus brought on by the physical and magical assault. The floor under my hands was slippery with sawdust and dirt. I wiped them on my jeans as I stood.

On the table, the crystal was gone. There was nothing in its place. No shards, no puddles of water. Nothing.

My stomach dropped. Shit. What the hell did I do?

Troy groaned from where he was sprawled on the floor. “Did it work?”

“I don’t know. She’s gone. Fuck.” I looked around. “Where the hell is Duke?”

Grimacing, Troy shook his head. “I don’t know. But there was one last trap that triggered when you did whatever the hell you did. I didn’t see it until it snared Duke. I’m sorry.”

I shook my head as my heart pounded. “Shit.”

My next words were cut off by banging on the warehouse door.

“My queen?” Etain’s voice. “What happened?”

I nodded toward the door. Troy dragged himself to his feet and went to it, speaking in a low tone to the rest of the elves. I clutched the callstone hanging around my neck and visualized Duke. “Duke? You still with us?”

No answer. Not even a sense of his mind. No, please no.

I drew on Chaos, hissing in pain as it burned through me. Handling the amount I just had was too much. I was overly sensitized now, and I swiped at the trickle of blood falling over my lips. It’d been a while since I’d had a nosebleed from overreaching myself. Now it just felt like I deserved it.

“Duke. Come on, asshole. Where—”

A tugging sensation in my chest cut me off, and the scent of lemon zest stung my nose as Duke materialized. “Such a way with words, little bird.”

Alongside him, a second form took shape.

Not the smooth interplanar manifestation I was used to seeing but something cracklier. Like there was interference somehow. Power seeped into the room along with the cloud, and behind me, Troy gave a last sharp order before returning to stand at my back.

The cloud slowly coalesced in disjointed fragments, and eyes like fire opals fixed on me.

“This is the one who freed me?” Her voice was deep and feminine but harsh with disuse, coming through like radio static.

Before I could answer, her gaze shifted to Troy.

“Elven scum!” she howled like a sandstorm.

“Iaret, no!” Duke’s cloud merged with the new one.

I backed up, pushing Troy with me, as they whirled. Lightning cracked, and heat like the desert at noon sent the temperature in the room spiking.

“Maybe you wanna get out,” I said in a low voice. I’d never seen djinn fight like this before. Usually they enjoyed doing it in a more corporeal form.

“I won’t run.” Troy didn’t sound certain of that plan, but he stuck by it. “I said I’d pay for what my people did. That means facing the consequences.”

For a man who’d been all about just following orders nine months ago, Troy had come a long way. I reached behind me and squeezed his hand then let it go as the tumult in front of us settled.
