Chapter Nineteen

Etania opened her eyes. Keyel was by her arm, and Jakin was standing a few feet away.

"Well?" Jakin asked.

She smiled wide, and the rose Mark glowed in response.

"You’re Marked!" Jakin also smiled. "That means you're officially part of Melchizedek's family."

“He told me he would help me control my powers!” Etania exclaimed.

“I told you,” the Ningyo guide replied, “And just in time, too.”

“What do you mean, Gabriel?” Keyel asked.

“We are getting close to the Khartome lake,” Gabriel answered.

“What’s so dangerous about that?” Etania asked.

“I can’t control the water around Toren’s island,” Gabriel said.

“Why not?” Etania questioned.

Gabriel shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“The Skazic,” Jakin said. “King Toren must have his Skazic controlling the water around the castle and the island.”

“What should we do then?” Keyel asked.

“I’m not sure,” Jakin said.

“Can we carry the boat to water that Gabriel controls?” Etania suggested, looking at the others.

“Will you be able to tell which water you can control?” Jakin inquired of Gabriel.

“Yes, by touch. However, you do know that we will have to carry the raft for about three days until we reach the Timane River, right?” Gabriel said.

“I realize that, but it is the only plan we have to evade the creatures living in Lake Khartome,” Jakin explained.

“I guess we’ll get to stretch our arm muscles then,” Keyel said.

“And try to pass by Lake Khartome undetected,” Gabriel added.

“Easy,” Jakin said sarcastically.

The statement did nothing to soothe Etania. Her heart was skipping like a stone across the water.
