Jay's eyes opened and saw nothing but a salty, bi m\, streaked blur of lights and colors. His eyes hurl and stung. His throat and windpipe felt like the) were on fire. He gasped in one very painful, ver) congested, rattling breath, and then erupted with anothei horribly painful cough of foul, salt\ water ih.it spit out in a spray upon the wet rock where he lay.

"Easy now," came the voice. "Just keep breathing. Do that first."

He drew another breath, and it hurt. I le was thankful for the air, but it still hurt, llis lungs wen-aching and burning, and he couldn't quit coughing. His eyes still saw nothing but .1 blur.

He heard someone else having a horrible fit of gasps and coughs, and it was his father. The voice just kept talking to them, telling them to relax and breathe, just breathe. They did that for a long time.

Jay could feel his head clearing up.

"Dad?" he asked very weakly and hoarsely.

"Yeah . . ." was the only answer he got, followed by more hacking and gasping.

"You're all right," said the voice. "I've got you. Just cough it up—that's the best thing."

Jay became aware of his arms. They could move. He reached with one hand and rubbed the brine and blur out of his eyes. He looked up.
