Chapter Fourteen

I avoided further discussion about my life goals, or lack thereof, by asking Jaykal about his wound. Though he brushed off my concern, I could tell he was secretly pleased I cared enough to want to check on it. So he let me lead him into the bathroom, so I could look at it.

My wall had dropped, and I picked up from the sex-addicted artist that getting naked, so I could check his wound, might lead to other things. Though the idea was more appealing than I would have thought possible, I was not going to distract these guys from their tasks. Getting back in touch with the outside world was our principal goal right now, and not just because it meant I would be free of them. I found I was really worried about the borderland domes being left unprotected.

I made Jaykal face away from me before he dropped his breechcloth. His playful pout had me smiling despite myself.

“What you can’t see is still out there, waiting to get you,” he pointed out, making it sound like he was talking about some dangerous predator.

Given the size and lethal power of these guys, he wasn’t wrong. But I didn’t think his gorgeous cock was a threat, except to my peace of mind.

He shucked the garment, revealing his seriously muscular butt-cheeks. The urge to curve my hands over them, to feel their hard bulk, was more of a temptation than I’d expected.

To distract myself, I focused on the bandage over the wound. How long had it been since I looked at it? No more than a couple of hours at most. Yet it seemed much longer, maybe because so much had happened in the interim.

With gentle fingers, I peeled back the padded bandage. My shocked gasp had Jaykal glancing over his shoulder in concern.

“It’s almost healed up. How is that possible?” I demanded, a little unnerved by the oddity of it.

“We heal quickly. That’s why I didn’t pay any attention to the wound initially. I thought it would be fine. But the Vargeez blood poisoned my own, interfering with my body’s ability to heal itself.”

I ripped off the bandage. “Well, you don’t need this anymore. I should have realized, given how energetic you were during sex.”

“Don’t beat yourself up about it. You were otherwise occupied.”

His smug grin made me bat his shoulder with the back of my hand.

His expression shifted, and he smiled properly. ‘That’s better. I like to feel you in my head. Feel free to cross my boundaries any time you want. I’m an open book to you, podmate.’

I hadn’t realized I’d dropped the wall between us. It was difficult to maintain, I was realizing. Yet I assumed it was like any other skill. Once you learned it, and practiced it often enough, it would become second-nature.

‘What do you want to do with your life?’ he asked me.

And before I could erect my wall, he went in search for the answer. I knew the moment he found it, because he didn’t like what he discovered.
