Chapter 5

Scott had never been particularly unhappy in his life, except for the fact that he’d never gotten to know his parents, and that wasn’t anything he’d ever found to be unbearable. His father had taken off as soon as he’d learned his girlfriend was pregnant, and his mother had died from complications during his birth. Still, his grandparents had given him a great life, so he couldn’t complain.

But he’d never been quite this happy before. Most mornings he woke with a smile on his face, partly because he and Erin would talk on the phone until they could barely keep their eyes open every night, and partly because they’d also been chatting before work every day. He couldn’t think of a nicer way to fall asleep or wake up.

Unless it was with Erin in his arms...

If things continued to be this good, he thought he might propose to her on Valentine’s Day. A little corny, he knew, but it still seemed perfect. She’d owned his heart for so long now, he couldn’t think of a better moment to ask her to be his wife.

Hoping that if she said yes, she wouldn’t want to wait a year or two for a big fancy wedding, Scott had started spending a little more time on the house. He didn’t care if the whole thing was ready, but he did want the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom remodeled before spring.

And that was why he’d gotten up dark and early to get started on the awful kitchen. He wanted to get the cupboards torn out, new wiring in, and the walls repaired by the first of the year. Hopefully Erin wouldn’t mind giving an opinion on which cabinets he should replace them with. After all, if everything went according to plan, she’d be spending many happy hours in it, with him to help out and keep her company.

Things had been going smoothly, until one of the two-by-fours the cupboard closest to the stove was mounted on didn’t want to come off. Scott really had to put some muscle into it and, when it finally did give way, it took part of the ceiling off with it.

When he picked himself up from the floor, he wasn’t sure if he’d been knocked out for a few seconds...or longer, but if the blood pooled on the carpet was any indication, it had been at least a few minutes.

With a sigh, he walked to the bathroom. ‘Walked’ might have been overstating it just a little. But a quick glance in the mirror made it clear that he would need stitches. Not much in life bothered his stomach, but the gash in his head, near his temple, was making him nauseous.

Scott tried, as best he could, to clean the plaster dust from his hair and clothes, and to wash the blood off his face, but it just kept oozing out. Eventually he just held a damp washcloth to the wound, and dialed Erin’s number. He was afraid he might be too lightheaded to drive.
