16.3.2 Constraint Dependence

In Newtonian physics, the minimum requirement for a mass density tensor to be regarded as representing a physically possible mass density is that it is positive. Similarly, in relativistic field theory it is demanded that the mass–energy density is positive in any frame of reference, for any observer. This constraint is known as the weak energy condition. Malament (2007, p. 240) defines it in the following way:
