“The Syks’ sovereignty is nothing but farce. A Race previously enslaved by the Arru’Thal, they continue to serve to their whims. One might argue their self-governing allowance was possible only because the Arru’Thal tired of micromanaging every aspect of Syks society.” – Lauda Kri, Compendium of Non-Union History

FOLLOWING TIN’S VOW, AVERY couldn’t help but let go of her residual anger. She forced herself until now to push it down, focusing only on survival and finding solutions to each newly arisen impediment in their quest for safety. She knew it wasn’t healthy, but as they faced those dangerous situations, she’d had little mental energy to direct into processing her emotions. Plus, if she was truthful, she found Tin’s efforts in righting his errors rather admirable. And sufficient. He put all her previous boyfriends to shame. No man had cared enough for Avery to be willing to sacrifice himself so readily or so completely.

Lost in her thoughts, Avery let the lasertool she was using to weld the wires of the comm station get too near to her gloved finger. “Damn it,” she cursed, switching the tool off and inspecting her seared glove. The repairs were slow-going, as Avery never repaired a thing in her life. She also had no idea what an alien screwdriver was even supposed to look like. So, Tin, in his infinite patience, chose every tool, then showed her an image, so she’d know what to find and pick up, then taught her how to use it. Nevertheless, they were almost finished with the repairs. It would only work for short-range communications, because fixing the station enough to support long-range comms surpassed Avery’s skills.

“My long-range sensors picked up a Syks ship in our proximity. It will catch up to us in less than an hour,” Tin announced, sounding a bit frantic.

More cursing followed his declaration, as Avery banged her head on the console when she slid from underneath it. “Goddamn it! How long until we exit their system?”

“Four more days,” he answered. With the two days that passed since the engine exploded and they entered the Syks’ territory, that made almost a week spent traversing this system. They kept to the fringes, choosing a circuitous route to avoid most of the patrols.

“I assume we can’t outrun it,” she replied. At their current pace, a smidge faster than a space turtle, she had no hopes for that outcome. “Is there anywhere we can hide?” she amended.

“Double negative. Even if there was a moon or a planet we could hide behind their own sensors would pick our location right up. We could try to shoot it, but I’d rather not draw more attention to us,” he said. “Not that we would win in a space battle. It’s infuriating to have so many resources at my disposal and not be able to use them.”

“So, normally, the Arru’Thal Crusher could take the Syks ship?” she asked slowly, as an idea formed. A crazy, wild, and wonderful idea.

“Yes, an Arru’Thal warship is invincible. Even the Union fears fighting one, as it’s vastly superior to anything the Union possesses.
