Preplanning Key Lessons

The teachers have written out a detailed lesson plan, almost like a film script, with repeated exposure to essential ideas and with awareness of possible confusing aspects of finding fractional amounts. By carefully preselecting the problems to discuss and preparing some of the questions, a teacher is more likely to provide instruction that will make the mathematics content accessible to all students. Also materials management is carefully planned, thus minimizing interruptions to learning.

It would be interesting to hear the teachers’ reasons for presenting a difficult second problem in this initial lesson and not giving students independent practice with such problems.
