However nothing raised the King more enemies than this spiteful and groundless report of a league with France, which had no other origin but this. Nor is it to be wondered that the King of France (seeing the design of drawing His Majesty into the alliance against him, which he had the more reason to apprehend because there was in reality no such league between them, and by consequence no obligation to the contrary) should endeavor by this flight of generosity in offering him succors and threatening the Dutch in his behalf to work him to his interest, it was no wonder each party should labor to get England on its side, it was sure to weigh down the balance wherever it was cast, but the King was too good a Christian to invade a Prince he had no quarrel with, and too much an Englishman to engage with France against his subjects’ inclinations. His intentions were to engross the trade of the world while foreign States destroyed each other, but the want of wit as well as loyalty in his subjects would not suffer them to be so happy. Fears of slavery amongst the gentry, and popery amongst the clergy, were so artificially spread as bewitched the people, not only to their ruin, but to be themselves the instruments of it; so the King suffered for his goodwill to the people, and the people were punished sufficiently for their folly and rebellion. The Dutch indeed gained their point and drew in the English rather to dethrone their King, than not to have their share in an expensive and bloody war, where nothing was to be got for themselves, instead of enjoying peace and a flourishing trade which their Prince designed them, and was thus rewarded by them for his good will.
