The sun shined on the Chesapeake Bay, sparkling in its splendor. Micah couldn’t help but think of God’s creation. It constantly amazed Him that God had trusted man to look after earth. And it shamed him to realize how they mistreated it. Yet, on this part of the bay, you could still see the purity in the water.

Micah turned into the senior condo community where his parents lived. He parked, locked his door, and headed for their first-floor condo. As he neared, smells of a savory meal hovered around the door. He sniffed trying to detect what his mother was making.

Before he could knock, the door swung wide open.

“Micah, my boy.” His father grinned.

His dad’s hair had turned completely white about ten years ago. His brown skin was covered with moles around his cheeks. Micah bit back a laugh at the floral-patterned shirt that his father wore. It was reminiscent of a Hawaiian vacation instead of December in Annapolis. “Hey, Pop.”

His father engulfed him into a hug, slapping his back and sapping his strength. Whoever said older people were weak had never met Jeremiah Campbell.

“Come on in. Your mother’s making her famous lasagna.”

Micah’s stomach growled. “Garlic bread, too?”

“You know it.” His pop chuckled and headed for the galley kitchen.

The kitchen had a peek-a-boo cut out, allowing the cook to see into the living room and the stunning views the marina had to offer. Although he wished his parents were still close by in Bethesda, he had to admit Annapolis had an appeal. The waterfront view seemed to soothe his soul.

“Micah!” his mother called out. She placed her apron on a hook and came from the kitchen, wrapping him in a hug.

“Hi, Mom.” He inhaled the scent of butterscotch that always seemed to linger around her. Growing up, his friends always knew she carried a piece of the candy.

“How are you?” she asked, as she pulled back.

“Good. Work is great. Maple Run is a nice place to live.” He shrugged.

“Any young ladies catch your eye, Micah?” Her eyebrows rose in one accord.

He suppressed a smile, remembering Belle’s frustration at not being able to arch a single eyebrow. “It’s complicated.”

“Oh, boy. Sounds like a Facebook status.” His mom patted the sofa. “Come sit down and tell us all about it.”

His stomach growled.

“Food will be ready in a few minutes, but you can have a piece of butterscotch if you want.” She pulled the candy out from her pocket.

“No thanks, Mom.”

His parents stared at him expectantly. His father had his hands folded over his stomach, his feet raised up on the recliner.

“Oh, you want me to tell you right now.”

“Don’t play foolish, Micah Campbell.” The maternal tone of his mother’s voice sent his mind back to his childhood. She had used the same tone whenever he got in trouble.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Who is she?”

“Her name is Belle—”

“Oh, that’s the girl your father mentioned.” She wagged a finger. “He wouldn’t tell me anything past her name.”

Micah stared at his dad, who winked at him.

“I told you he’d tell you when he was ready.
