Chapter Seven

Today was the day that Mia was going to “meet the parents”. Because of the things that Daniel had previously told her, she felt ready to battle anything that his mom threw her way.

As they pulled up to the home for one of the Fitzgerald’s family barbeques, Mia felt even more determined to win him over. She knew they had money but she wasn’t expecting everything that she saw. The home was amazing. It was bigger and better than Daniels. It had the greenest grass she had ever seen, like a professional golf course that had been meticulously maintained. There was a wraparound driveway complete with a fountain. As she stepped out of the car, her expression went from amazement to a game face with dollar signs in her eyes.

Mia was a little nervous because the last time she walked into a home for dinner, disaster struck. She needed this to work out perfectly. As she walked hand in hand with Daniel up the stairs, she was taken aback by the gentleman that opened the front door and greeted them.

“Son,” the short seasoned gray haired man in overalls said as an even shorter woman peeked from behind him.

“What’s up parents?” Daniel responded playfully as he hugged them both.

Mia had to catch herself from frowning as Daniel introduced her. “Mia, meet my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel and Grace Fitzgerald.”

Mr. Fitzgerald greeted her with a hug. “DJ has told us so much about you,” he said.

Mrs. Fitzgerald greeted her with nothing more than a wave while standing behind her husband.

“DJ?” Mia asked, needing clarification on who DJ was.

“Me babe. Daniel Senior and Daniel Junior,” he said as he pointed from his dad to himself.

Still in shock over his parent’s appearance, she couldn’t help but wonder if Daniel was adopted. Both of his parents were short. She guessed no more than five feet five inches but Daniel towered over them. He didn’t favor either of his parents. His mom was gorgeous, his dad, not so much. Since she wasn’t here to judge a beauty contest and Maury wasn’t here to decide if Mr. Fitzgerald was the father, she redirected her thoughts.

Meeting Mia for the first time, Daniel’s parents had a lot of questions, especially his mother. As the whole family sat around the dinner table, Mrs. Fitzgerald didn’t hold back.

“What do you do for a living?” she asked Mia.

“I am a gamer,” she answered without any hesitation. She was careful to make note and study specific information that she had told Daniel to ensure that her answers aligned.

“A gamer?” Mr. Fitzgerald asked while looking quite confused. “I am not sure what that is, but it sounds fancy,” he continued as everyone in the room chuckled a little. Mr. Fitzgerald was the comedian of the family and used any chance he could to crack a joke.

“And just what does a gamer do?” Mrs. Fitzgerald asked redirecting the tone of the conversation back to serious.

Mia was ready for these questions and she had planned all her answers.
