Today was the day of my nana’s funeral and I really didn’t want to go through with this, but I had to say my goodbyes. Sierra was dressed and ready, so now I had to get dressed. Onie would come along with Chester. Things had been kind of weird with us lately, but I wasn’t going to address that until after I got through this day.

My brother was supposed to be meeting us at the house so we could ride together. I finished getting dressed, then Sierra and I headed down the stairs. We walked out the door and I locked up. We were getting in the limo as Dusty’s ass finally showed up. This nigga would be late to his own funeral if you asked me. He ran over to the limo and joined us.

The driver drove off and I just sat there with all these thoughts of Nana not being here every day to give me those laughs and the much-needed talks we had. She wouldn’t be here to see me walk down the aisle with Onie. She wouldn’t be here to see Sierra grow up. Feeling the tears roll down my face, I wiped them away. Sierra scooted towards me closer, laying her head on my arm. I knew she knew I was sad about Nana and wanted to comfort me.

The limo pulled up to the church and he opened the door and we all filed out. Holding Sierra’s hand, we walked up to the front doors of the church. Going in, I saw Onie and Chester standing at the front, waiting on us. Walking over to her, I hugged and kissed her before we walked inside. Going to the front of the church, I looked down at Nana and she looked so peaceful. Leaning down, I whispered, “I love you and will miss you, Nana.”

Walking away, I took my seat, along with Onie and Chester. Sierra sat on my lap. Everyone else filed in and walked up to the front and viewed Nana’s body. Then they came and hugged us or shook our hands, telling us they were sorry for our loss. I was over it already. I just wanted to get this shit over with because I needed to be away from all these fake ass people. None of these mothafuckas were around when she needed someone to care for her and now they all wanted to show up when she was gone.

Everyone was seated and the pastor was at the podium talking about Nana. I just sat there, spaced out, feeling Onie rub my back, calming me down as I listened to the pastor talk about Nana’s life here on earth. It was time for everyone to give their greatest memories of Nana and I was the first one up to speak.

“Nana was my grandma. She raised me and my brother as her own after our parents were killed when we were just youngins. Her and Paw Paw did their best to raise us.
